Adult Transition Program Class of 2015 graduates to cheers of family, friends
The Fresno County Office of Education honored 57 graduates from its Adult Transition Program’s Class of 2015 on Friday, May 29 at the Golden Palace Event Center in Fresno. Students entered the ceremony to “Pomp and Circumstance” as family and friends cheered for their achievements, waving balloons and hand-made signs.
This was no ordinary graduation ceremony, but an extra-special evening recognizing students who face almost insurmountable obstacles, but continue striving to achieve.
FCOE’s Adult Transition Program provides services for students, ages 18 to 22 years, with moderate to severe developmental delays, as well as other disabling conditions. As a service provided to districts within Fresno County, the Adult Transition Program serves as a link between the public schools and the world of post-school adult services. Student plans are developed to teach social, personal management, communication, safety, vocational, home and community living skills.
The ceremony included a video tribute showing the graduates involved in a variety of activities. Graduates smiled as they recognized themselves and their classmates. One of the highlights of the evening was a speech by student Rosario Lopez, who shared her thoughts with sign language, which was read aloud by her interpreter, Deborah Washington.
“When I first came to ATP four years ago I was a very scared, quiet and shy girl. I did not know what to expect,” she said. “These four years are one of the happiest times in my life. I learned many things and made friends. I am ready to leave and start a new chapter in my life."
