December Superintendent’s Superstar shines
Kathia is a junior at Edison High School in the Fresno Unified School District. She not only excels in the classroom, but is dedicated to making her community a better place. As president of the MEChA Club, Kathia has made her program more active by merging efforts with Mi Familia Vota to engage students in the Youth Leadership and Civic Engagement Program.
Kathia was instrumental in ensuring that she and other student leaders registered 300 students to vote at Edison’s National Voter Registration Day 2017. Earlier in the year, she played an important role in collecting more than 800 signatures for the Self Place Resolution, which was passed unanimously by the FUSD Board of Education. She was consistent in attending board meetings to make her voice heard and when it was passed, she gave a speech to her peers.
Over the summer, she advocated for justice in women’s health by engaging in the Week of Political Action with California Latinas Presente. There she attended legislative visits to support bills that would make healthcare more affordable to women.
On campus, she is the secretary of the Feminist Club, treasurer for the Spanish Lit Club and is involved in the Latinos for Excellence Club. She will have completed eight AP and honors courses by the end of the year. She is in her third year of the Computer Science Pathway and is also in the Fresno State Upward Bound Program and the Ivy League Project.
