December Superintendent’s Superstar shines
Fanni Herr, a senior at Design Science High School, wrote an essay for World Kindness Day on Nov. 13 about how she found strength and purpose through loss. At school she was always quiet and said she never felt like it offered opportunity for her. Pursuing her education was a reflection of her parent’s desires, but not her own. That changed at the end of middle school when she lost an important friend from suicide because of bullying. After her friend’s death, Fanni rediscovered herself and committed to her education as a way of honoring her friend’s life. She is currently planning to attend UC Irvine, majoring in English with an emphasis on Library Science. During her time of mourning and loss, Fanni said others offered her kindness and support. She hopes the kindness she shows will inspire others to do the same and take a stand against bullying. She said in her essay, “Her actions may be small, but she knows she can make a big impact.” Fanni not only spreads kindness through her essay, but through her actions by volunteering in the community for a variety of organizations, including Saint George Greek Orthodox Church for their annual Greek Festival; Rise Against Hunger to package and deliver food to developing countries; and Home Instead Senior Care to collect and donate presents during the holiday season to seniors. |
