Advancing excellence, ensuring that young people realize their academic potential, and making a difference in the educational experience of Fresno County students during this recent economic downturn are the fundamental reasons The Foundation @ FCOE was established by a small group of dedication community leaders in 2009. On Saturday, September 29, the Board of Directors hosted its first signature event honoring four community-minded individuals who were chosen for their dedication to advancing education and helping students realize their academic potential. The 2012 honorees are:

Academics
David “Mas” Masumoto, a farmer and published author

Agriculture
Earl Smittcamp, an agribusiness leader

Arts
Margaret Hudson, an artist of clay and paint

Athletics
Rafer Johnson, an Olympic gold medal decathlete, professional athlete and writer

The 2012 recipients were recognized and awarded commemorative medals during a tribute performance produced in their honor at the Paul Shaghoian Concert Hall. Dinner and a live auction followed, raising almost $100,000 to benefit students and educational programs in Fresno County. Event sponsors included Educational Employees Credit Union, Granville Homes, Wells Fargo, Fresno Coin Gallery, The Business Journal, The Fresno Bee, and 25 other local businesses and individuals. "In addition to honoring these pillars in our community, the FCOE Honors Gala was an excellent way to support our community's greatest asset- our students," said Al Galvez, FCOE Foundation Board President.
