University High wins 35th Annual Fresno County Academic Decathlon

University High School took first place in the 35th Annual Fresno County Academic Decathlon on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Central High School East. Edison High School took second place and Bullard High School took third place in the competition. Twenty-five county high schools participated in this year’s competition. The theme for this year’s event was “World War II.” 

The Academic Decathlon teams were comprised of three “A” students, three “B” students and three “C” students who competed in 10 examinations: Art, music, language and literature, mathematics, economics, speech, interview, essay, science and social science. The final culminating Super Quiz on Feb. 4 encompassed all areas of study and earned the team up to 5,400 points. 

Fresno County’s winning team will compete in the California State Decathlon March 23-25 in Sacramento. The state championship team will advance to the National Decathlon in April in Madison, Wisconsin. 

The 2017 Decathlon was hosted by California State University, Fresno and the Central Unified School District, coordinated by the Office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools and sponsored by participating high schools and local businesses. More than $8,000 in scholarships were awarded to participating students. Local business sponsors for the Decathlon included the Office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, Educational Employees Credit Union, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Johanson Transportation Service, ACSA Region IX, CSUF Teaching Fellows, Educational Resource Consultants and Executive Business Products.
