October 2023 Employee of the Month

It is with pleasure that we honor Steve Bock, Director of Scout Island in the Curriculum & Instruction Department, as the October 2023 Employee of the Month.

Selfless leadership is a style that prioritizes the success and well-being of others over personal gain or recognition. Steve is that kind of leader. Also known as the Mayor of Scout Island, Steve has built an exceptional outdoor education program offering students the opportunity to experience nature through engaging, hands-on activities that align with and complement school curriculum while promoting positive social-emotional well-being.

In addition to facilitating extraordinary educational experiences for over 21,000 students last school year alone, Steve routinely hosts events for programs and district partners, such as the Scout Island Adventure Challenge, professional learning communities for science and math, Migrant Education Summer Camp, ROP Appreciation Luncheon, Foster and Homeless Youth student recognition celebrations and the FCSS Family Picnic. Steve has developed partnerships with Tree Fresno, San Joaquin River Parkway, Xerces Society and the United States Department of Agriculture to provide thousands of trees, shrubs and native grasses to the Scout Island nursery for habitat restoration. He is also highly respected by the community of homeowners at the river.

Steve listens to everyone’s ideas and collaborates with his team of docents to create new lessons and activities. Steve and his team make learning fun. No matter how big or small the task, Steve is the first one to get his hands dirty. Whether Steve is handing out water bottles to the instructors and students on a hot summer day or running equipment to care for the land, you can always count on Steve.
