May Superintendent’s Superstar shines

Marianita Garcia is a senior at Washington Union High School. She excels not only academically, but has also dedicated herself to giving back to the community. She has been a member of the Community Service Club for four years, volunteering for Toys for Tots. Garcia was also accepted and participated in the UCSF-Fresno Medical Education Program’s Biomedical Research internship program this last summer. She was one of nine students from across the Central Valley who was accepted into this prestigious program. She was assigned to work with Dr. Honda, a pathologist, and assisted in his research over the course of the summer.

Garcia is highly intelligent, inquisitive and yearns to gain an in-depth knowledge. She is ranked No. 1 in her class. Through her involvement with the Health Institute program at Washington Union, she has shown a desire for learning, leadership and a heart for service. Garcia has accumulated over 255 hours as a volunteer at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and UCSF Fresno this year alone. In April, she was recognized by HOSA "Future Health Professionals" at the state student leadership conference and received the Barbara James Service Award. She will also be recognized nationally in Dallas during the summer for this same award.

Garcia plans to attend Fresno State and pursue a career in law.
