Superintendent’s Superstar October 2024

October 2024 Superstars - David Mattox's 5th/6th Grade Class

Last school year, teacher David Mattox’s fifth/sixth-grade class at Gettysburg Elementary in Clovis Unified School District explored global outcome inequality and ways they could help others around the world. In one lesson, Gettysburg students heard from a medical professional who lived and worked in a hospital in Ethiopia and learned about patients who needed affordable care. Upon hearing that $400 could cover medical expenses for a surgery, the class decided to start fundraising.

Students made a variety of crafts, such as bracelets, origami art and stress balls. They also received a donation of oranges from a local citrus company that they sold during their Open House and Grandparent’s Breakfast events.

Because of their class efforts, they raised more than $2,000, enough to cover five surgeries!

Students Ben Giesel, seventh grade at Clark Intermediate School who participated last year; Clara Weaver, sixth grade; and Julayah Escovedo, sixth grade, are representing their Gettysburg classmates today and accepting the Superstar honor on their behalf.
